Summer Pests: Protecting Your Dog from Bee and Wasp Stings

Summer brings flowers, grass, backyard meals, and outdoor adventures—but it also brings bees and wasps. Curious dogs often explore with their noses and paws, which makes stings more likely around the face, mouth, legs, and paws.

Most bee or wasp stings cause temporary pain, swelling, licking, or pawing at the area. Your dog may suddenly yelp, jump back, rub their face, or become unusually restless. Mild swelling can happen, but it should be watched carefully.

The most important thing is knowing when a sting may be serious. If your dog has swelling around the face, muzzle, throat, or neck, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, collapse, widespread hives, or excessive drooling, contact a veterinarian right away. Stings inside the mouth or multiple stings can be especially concerning.

Prevention starts with your outdoor space. Keep food and sweet drinks covered during backyard gatherings. Clean up fallen fruit, spilled treats, and trash quickly. Check under patio furniture, around sheds, and near garden corners for nests before letting your dog explore.

During walks, be mindful around flowering plants, tall grass, trash bins, and picnic areas where insects may gather. A secure leash and comfortable harness can help you gently guide your dog away from buzzing spots before curiosity becomes a problem.

A simple summer outing kit can also help. Pack fresh water, a portable bowl, pet wipes, a towel, and your veterinarian’s contact information. If your dog is prone to investigating insects, shorter supervised outdoor sessions may be safer during peak summer activity.

Avoid giving medications without veterinary guidance. Even common human medications can be unsafe for dogs depending on the dose, breed, size, and health history. When in doubt, call your veterinarian first.

Summer pest safety is not about keeping your dog indoors all season. It is about preparing thoughtfully so your dog can enjoy sunny walks, patio time, and backyard play with less risk. With awareness, supervision, and the right outdoor dog supplies, you can help protect your dog from bee and wasp stings while still enjoying the best parts of summer.
